On The Origins of Epidemics

Event Description - On The Origins of Epidemics
Sydney Science Forum 2010 - ON THE ORIGIN OF EPIDEMICS
Presented by Professor Edward C.Holmes

How do epidemics start and spread in human populations?
Can we predict what epidemics will occur next? In this lecture, Professor Holmes will address these fundamental questions by examining how evolving RNA viruses are able to jump species boundaries and emerge in humans, sometimes with devastating effects. As case studies Professor Holmes will consider in detail the origins and spread of influenza and dengue, both of which are of great public health importance in Australia. This lecture
will also highlight how the new tools of comparative genomics and phylodynamics are helping to rapidly unravel the patterns and dynamics of viral spread.
