Dubbo Alumni Event: "Space Tourism: The Final Frontier"

Event Description - Dubbo Alumni Event: "Space Tourism: The Final Frontier"

Alumni are cordially invited to join the University of Sydney Western NSW Alumni Network at the School of Rural Health in Dubbo on Thursday 18 March for an entertaining and illuminating evening with well-known media commentator and scientist Fred Watson AM.  Fred's topic for the evening will be "Space Tourism: The Final Frontier".

The turn of the millennium has brought a new dimension to the space age - one that was undreamed of only a few years ago. Thanks to a combination of visionary entrepreneurs and an ailing Russian spaceflight programme, space tourism is now a reality that is set to take off dramatically in the near future. In this entertaining and fully-illustrated talk, Fred Watson outlines what we might see as space tourism evolves into a mainstream branch of the industry.

He argues that the new venture is not merely an expensive diversion for the very rich, but a necessary step in humankind's emergence as a space-faring species.

Fred Watson AM is Astronomer-in-Charge of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) at Siding Spring near Coonabarabran, NSW, and Project Manager for the international RAVE radial velocity survey of a million stars. He holds honorary and adjunct professorships at a number of Queensland based universities and is a well known public speaker and scientific communicator. Fred has regular slots on ABC Radio and is a frequent guest on ABC TV’s Catalyst. His published works include Stargazer – the Life and Times of the telescope and Why is Uranus upside down, and other questions about the Universe. In 2010 Fred was admitted as a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to astronomy, particularly the promotion and popularisation of space science through public outreach.

Tickets for the evening are $25 per person for Alumni of the University of Sydney and $30 per person for all non-alumni guests. Prices include drinks and cocktail refreshments throughout the evening. All welcome!
